Last night I was glued to BBC and CNN awaiting details of the four "small" bombings that took place there, just two weeks after the spate of attacks that killed close to 60 people . I'm concerned about the terrorist attacks there because my 2nd Mom lives there. My Tita Noray has been living there for almost 3 decades now. I was worried because I know she prefers taking the tube to work over driving.
While watching the news coverage I couldn't help but admire the way the UK government handled the situation. I admired the way PM Tony Blair, just shortly after the incidents took place, assuaged the fears of his people and encouraged them to go about their usual business because to do otherwise would mean yielding to the terrorists. But he also did not belittle the impact of the attacks.
I admired the way the police gave an update of where the bombings took place and what really happened, their assessment of the situation, and the way they adviced people to "stay where you are."
The way the government handled the situation left little room for people to go into panic mode. They made the people feel that they were in control of the situation and that they were there for the people. Ang galeng!
I hope I can say the same thing about our government. But I think that's a looooong shot considering that just a teeny weeny televised public apology had to go through 48 takes (but without really much success.) Imagine 48 takes, and still no trace of sincerity! They would have been better off if they asked Juday to do it for them.
