An open letter

My Dearest Joy,

I heard you're at it again, listening to that unstable part of your heart that wilts at the sight of an adult male Promil baby with mood swings as bad as your own.

Why can't you just settle for some uncomplicated dumb guy with no talent and no illusion of conquering the universe? Didn't I tell you that a guy who's too gifted will only give you migraines of the unwelcome kind?

When will you ever learn, my dear? By now you should know that: complicated girl + complicated guy = a total mess. Are you a masochist? You're turning out to be worse than Rosa. At least your bestfriend was able to get rid of that frigid guy, and it doesn't really matter now that it was really by providential force and not by her own choice.

You are again willfully teetering on the brink of disaster. Please, don't dare go near the edge. It's bad for your health--physical, emotional, AND spiritual! But you know these things already. As Rosa is wont to say: Matanda ka na!

Here's my suggestion: Why don't you just concentrate on the many tasks you know you need to accomplish? Like working on that book, calling Ate Glo, getting new clients for Brillo, writing those articles, going back to Hong Kong, taking singing and painting seriously, going to Bora, even saving enough for a vacation at Tita Nor's in London 1, 2, or 3 years from now...

You know you've got so much to do. And you are living an exciting life. Don't get distracted by those "interesting" distractions, because no matter how creative you may want to describe them they are just that: distractions.

I hope you will take my suggestion seriously, for OUR sake.

With much love and understanding,
(the good) Joy

PS. That Atkins diet is good for you. Keep doing it and I guarantee, you'll have more options than you have now. ;)
